Ponitrans - Slovakian String Band
ponitrans_1a.jpgOn Monday 10th November, children attending Monks Abbey Primary School in Lincoln were treated to an east European musical tour-de-force in the form of Slovakian string band, Ponitrans. Hailing from Nitra in Slovakia, the band, led by Bernard Garaj, have been touring around the UK over the past month.

ponitrans_4.jpgponitrans_2.jpgStarting with morning assembly and ending with an after-school club, Bernard led his fellow musicians through a long and intensive day of workshops with children of all ages. In addition to the strings, the band play a whole variety of other instruments including a cimbalon, various flutes - some of which are unique to Slovakia - and the Slovakian bagpipes.

The day was organised in collaboration with community arts organisation, Artscope, who are running their Youth Music funded TEN project in the school, and local musician, Liam Robinson, who brought this wonderful opportunity to Firebird's attention a few months ago.

Time was also made in the day for all the musicians working with Artscope on TEN to meet with their Slovakian counterparts and is part of the continuing professional development they receive through the project and which is coordinated by Firebird.  ponitrans_3c.jpg

The day was made possible through Firebird's service level agreement with Lincolnshire County Council and is part of a special series of initiativies to raise the standard and quality of participatory music activities throughout the county.
