At the end of May 2009, Firebird's Executive Director, Simon Steptoe, travelled to the city of Chengdu in China, to meet with partners at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music.

The purpose of the visit was to discuss Firebird's proposal for "Frontiers", an exciting new initiative to get traditioinal Chinese musicians over to the UK to collaborate with musicians and composers from KOMPOSIT, another major Firebird initiative, and work with communities in the East Midlands.

Simon also visited Shanghai to talk with colleagues at Shanghai Expo 2010, a high profile international exhibition event taking place next year and a major force behind the current modernisation of the city.
 
The visit was underwritten by a "Connections through Culture" grant from the British Council in China.

Firebird wishes to thanks to East Midlands musician, Ling Peng, a graduate of the Conservatory, for help in setting up initial contacts with the institution.
